Spelling Bee

Each year Colfax enrolls in the Scripps National Spelling Bee for students in grades 3-5. Beginning in the fall, students who are interested in participating meet regularly to study spelling lists provided Scripps. A school spelling bee is held where we identify a school champion. This student then heads off to the next round of the bee, the regional, which takes place at Walter Reed Middle School. Following that, school champions compete in district, county and finally the national spelling bee where a champion is declared during a nationally televised live broadcast.

In 2021, we didn't let the COVID-19 pandemic stop us from getting our spell on! Colfax held our annual Spelling Bee on Zoom with our typical number of participants and all the families watching from home. Nathan H. was our winner and he continued on to represent Colfax at the LA County Regional Competition. Competing again the top ten finalists out of 26,000 local 3rd - 8th graders, Nathan finished in an outstanding tie for 5th place!

In 2022, Nathan H. was back as a 5th grader to repeat his win in his last Colfax Spelling Bee and came out on top against 16 mighty participants (including his own 3rd grade sister)! Good luck at the Regional Bee, Nathan!
